Thomas Balf, Founder and Principal, Nexus Environmental Partners
Thomas Balf has nearly twenty five (25) years of diverse experience in the environmental, health and safety and sustainability fields. He has served as the Director of the Campus Consortium for Environmental Excellence (C2E2) for over ten years, and now advises NACUBO as the Project Director of the EPA funded Campus Environmental Resources Center, the premier higher education web-based environmental resource library. Tom has been directly involved in many of the higher education leadership initiatives during the last decade, including the development of a laboratory rulemaking for colleges and universities, the promotion of tools for measuring environmental performance improvements on campus, the relevant application of environmental management systems (EMS) to colleges/universities, and third-party auditing and review. His clients include higher education associations, individual colleges and universities and federal and state agencies. Tom has also been actively involved in sustainability issues for fifteen years. As the former Environmental Affairs Director of a leading green corporation, Tom completed one of the first publicly available environmental reports and was involved in the early years of CERES and the creation of the Global Reporting Initiative(GRI). Tom’s unique brand of patience, communication and leadership and his ability to apply his ecological and interdisciplinary skills to the issues and management challenges in higher education have proven helpful over the last decade of environmental change on campus. Michael Field, LEED AP
Michael works with Nexus on campus sustainability programming, carbon reduction planning, green building initiatives, and environmental management systems, with a particular emphasis on engaging senior administrators.
Michael is a former Assistant Provost, assistant dean and faculty at Boston University. Michael offers relevant experience in Capital Planning and Project Management, Space Allocation, Operations, and Sustainability. At BU, he spearheaded efforts within the University to minimize the environmental footprint associated with campus operations, chaired the sustainability committee and oversaw the communication strategy to connect faculty, staff and students with University operation. He has a B.S. from the U.S. Naval Academy, a M.A. from the Institute de Hautes Etudes Internationales et du Déceveloppement, and his Ph.D. from Boston University. Timothy J. Greiner
Tim works with Nexus on campus Greenhouse Gases (GHG) inventory projects, sustainability program assessments and strategic planning, procurement and chemical policies, and sustainability benchmarking.
Tim is a founding partner of Pure Strategies, Inc. and specializes in building environmental and social integrity into products, brands and businesses. He has extensive experience in conducting GHG inventories and advising clients on carbon reduction strategies. He consults with domestic and overseas manufacturers, socially responsible business and environmental advocacy groups. Current and former clients include Georgetown University, the U.S. EPA, Seventh Generation and Timberland. He has a B.S. in Materials Science Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.S. in Environmental Policy and Business from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Madeline Snow, University of Massachusetts Lowell
Madeline works with Nexus on the application of environmental management systems to regulatory compliance and sustainability programs, communication strategies and training workshops.
Madeline is the Director of UMass Lowell’s EMS Service Program at the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production. She has expertise and experience in developing and auditing Environmental Management Systems in public transit authority facilities, colleges, universities, and municipalities. An experienced trainer and facilitator, she has also developed guidebooks, including “An Environmental Management Guide for Colleges and Universities for EPA Region 1” and an “Energy Management Guide for Water and Wastewater Utilities for EPA.” She spent 25 years in the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection in a variety of programs, including enforcement, water quality planning, waste site cleanup, emergency response, and strategic planning. Thomas C. Ouimet
Tom works with Nexus on strategic management and regulatory assignments with an emphasis on effective training and communications through the use of technology.
Tom has been providing professional environmental, health and safety services to commercial, government, and non-profit clients for over twenty years. Tom’s involvement with Nexus includes the development of EH&S communication and training strategies and the production of educational materials, including short videos, podcasts, slide presentations and web-based training programs that effectively communicate key environmental, health/safety and sustainability information in alignment with institutional goals. He holds an MBA and a MPH and is a certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a certified Safety Professional (CSP). James T. Curtis, P.E., LSP
Jim works with Nexus on environmental compliance projects particularly if they involve site contamination issues, remedial construction, or engineering expertise.
Jim is a Massachusetts Licensed Site Professional (LSP), a Professional Engineer in three states, and holds additional designations. He has more than 20 years of progressive managerial, technical, and communications experience across a wide range of fields related to environmental management, environmental compliance, site investigations, remedial construction programs, Environmental Management Systems, sustainability, and recycling and waste reduction programs. Current and former clients include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wellesley College, Harvard University, Mt. Auburn Hospital, and the College of the Holy Cross. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Civil) from Princeton University and a Master of Science (Environmental Engineering) from Northeastern University.
